My classmate and I created this research poster exploring the best treatment methods for an ill paraplegic individual, which was based off of a patient he saw during his clinical rotation. We looked at how the patient was treated in the hospital, what were the outcomes of this treatment, and the aspects of this treatment we would have kept or changed. The poster follows the ADIME nutrition care process model, focusing on the diagnosis and care of malnutrition vs disuse muscle atrophy in those with paraplegia, as this pertains to a potentially difficult and delayed recovery process.

We planned on presenting our poster at the Russ Klein Symposium, which highlights OSU graduate student nutrition research, however the event was canceled due to COVID-19. Fortunately we were still able to present to our class and facilitate discussion around our research.
For this assignment, I presented a case study on a patient I met with during my clinical rotation at OSUWMC. This patient had received RNYGB surgery 8 years ago and was experiencing malnutrition related to anastomosis friable mucosa and ulceration. The assignment not only included the patient's background, treatment, and follow up as presented in an ADIME, but also the coding and billing requirements for hospital reimbursement, summary of evidence-based practice guidelines from the Academy's EAL along with other sources, and current research that could be applied to treatment of the patient.

Throughout the internship competency modules were assigned to not only help us prepare for our clinical rotations, but to build our knowledge base for when we encounter these populations as dietitians. Click on the links below to view these modules.
